I live in New York and have been to many Knicks and Rangers games, as well as a tour of MSG, so here goes. Say, in a hypothetical situation, we have the Rangers playing a 3:00 home game and the Knicks playing a 9:00 home game. The court on top (made out of wooden blocks about 10'-10') will be lifted up, the ice will have already been chilled, and the Rangers will play. Once the game is over, the pieces (stored under the first tier of seats) will be taken out and fit into a court on top of the ice.

The wood court goes over the ice.

There is a special insulation in between the ice and the sectioned wood floor, so the floor doesn't feel as cold as the ice beneath. They have the wood floor in sections so it can easily be put on and taken off when it is needed.

With skating on the ice, it would be next to impossible to have sectioned ice, and for that amount of ice, they wouldn't be able to melt it and refreeze a new sheet for each Ranger's game.

My brother in law used to work at our local civic center, which has the same arrangement. The basketball court is constructed in interlocking sections, and it is insulated to keep the ice intact underneath the court, as well as keep the court from getting too cold.It took a trained crew about 4 hours to lay the floor over the ice, with the aid of forklifts and the like.

Some of these answers are so funny. The ice is underneath the floor. They do the ice about a month before the season starts and then it is just covered up all season. thery have to have video of a floor going up and coming down on the net.

The ice is under the basket ball court. There are insulated panels over it. This was shown on How do They do that.

they probably strip the wood and then fill it with water and then drain it when the games over. i be they have some kind of heater under the court so it can get done pretty quickly
