It could be the fan motor, that causes this. But depending on the type of car it is it could be easy to change out or it might be difficult and expensive.

Here is a very helpful site you can get a free vehicle repair guide to help you with your problem, it will walk you through about anything that you would have to do to your car.

http://www.autozone.com/

When you get there just click on "current vehicle" in the top left and follow the steps. It's pretty simple.

Something as simple as your ac/heater's fan intake sucked up a kleenex or other piece of paper from the fan's intake near the passenger side floor area would cause this because that air intake acts just like an "invisible vacuum cleaner". That paper just threw your fan blower wheel totally 'off balance' and oh what a noise!!

This is a benefit of choosing "MAX A/C" on a day when entering a hot car because that ac fan gets its air intake from INSIDE the car, and you just know you have the fan speed at HI trying to cool it faster.

That =HAS= to be the most 'mislabled', and most misunderstood setting on EVERY car's A.C. Controls. 21+ years as a dealership automotive technician have taught me better logic. I mean think about it! On a hot day when it's 90 outside, it's -at least- 125 inside that hot car, usually hotter.

Why __on earth__ would someone even -try- to produce comfortable cool air by =forcing= your ac system to cool 125 degree air instead of air that's 90?? That is -exactly- what "Max AC" does in every single car manufactured!! I'd say that's a hidden ploy to sell a/c repairs & parts!!!

Why should this setting be labled ""Max AC"" or be signified by a curved arrow (same thing!)?? It's called OVER-WORKING your A/C system! Rolling down windows and selecting "AC" is much more efficient and ADDS years to an A/C sytem's lifetime. When the air blows cool, roll up the wynders. I _know_ what I'm talking about. :))) I can see a *SERIOUS* need for a law change here!!

Also, if you leave pencils or pens lying on top of your dash, if they fall down a defroster duct opening, they end up at the fan's squirrel cage. And there's a source of a very LOUD noise!!

squirrel cage is stuck/rubbing against that thing(writing pen/pencil/toothpicks) you dropped into your defrost vents by accident, probably sheared the cage off the motor.
If you like learning new things(skills/agility/cuss words) you are going to love this if you do it yourself.

Maybe your fan motor is out.If they have to take apart the dash it will be big bucks.

Are you sure it's not the "nut" behind the steering wheel?
