what is the choke cup for on my intake manifold of my 383?

it covers the choke thermostat

I'm not shure what a " choke cup " is but if it is a cast hollow spot in the manifold directly under the choke it could be where the bi-metallic coil to control choke operation is suppose to go, they have a water passage close by and as the engine warms up the choke opens.
