We cub fans don't think soriano is the only reason we have a chance. we need pitching but we have an increased payroll for that. Plus the NL centural is very weak. our team looks strong but everybody whining about pitching when they haven't even focused on it. now the will and hopefully get some good ones. we have the toughest day games so we also need a strong bench. there are truely more reasons we can make the playoffs besides soriano.
Does anyone agree.

and for people who think they still don't have enough power what about the 27 from jones. those are likely to go up because it was his first season in the NL

The short answer: Its the nature of sports and rivalries. Its natural for people to speculate positively or negatively when a big FA signing or trade takes place. I say shake it off and ignore the negativism.

Specifically as the state of the team is concerned, I posted a long answer to another question (check it out if you'd like), and I'll sum it up by saying that Soriano is certainly a nice guy to have, but there is still a lot of off-season work to be done.

As for the power concern, I'm not following where that is coming from. I don't think anyone contends that the Cubs won't have enough power in their line-up.

The Cubs definitely have a good chance. Look @ their projected starting lineup. 1. Soriano 2. DeRosa 3. Jacque Jones 4. Derek Lee 5. Ramirez 6. Murton 7. Izturis 8. Barrett. Speed & power are the top 7 spots. The ONLY drawback is Jones is the only left handed hitter. The Cubs have gone after power & speed since the pitching market is relatively weak. The Cubs have an average starting rotation, at best. Unless they can keep Prior healthy, that gives them 2(Zambarno & Prior) premier pitchers, with the rest being average. With that amount of speed & power, the Cubs would have to face pitching rivaling that of the 2005 Whitesox everyday not to have a winning record. This just MIGHT be the year of the Cubs. Look out.

I'm not a fan of the Cubs, but I have nothing against them( I really don't have a NL team, maybe the Pirates because they are closeby) . I hope that they do well. It's nice to see that they are dedicating themselves to winning by signing this core player. plus with Sweet Lou... anything can happen
In my opinion for the whole of baseball, the more competitive that the game becomes, more people will tune in and baseball will become America's #1 sport again ( not that it isn't already to me).

With more clubs being competitive, it drew 75+ million people to the games in 2006!

I agree. I think The Cubs have a better chance now then they did before. The Cubs will win the world series before the whinny sux win another one.

Most of the people that are hating on The Cubs are whinny sux fans. They do it because they are jealous. The Cubs have a better fan base, Better fans that are loyal to thier team regradless. The whinny sux wish they could be as good as The Cubs.

AS a twins fan, i agree 100% with the twins not resigning Jacque JOnes since he strikes out a bunch of times when he was with the twins, and it far outweighed the hits that he got. AS for the cubs, i dont think they should have signed soriano for that much and for that long.

Those who say cubs won't be good are trying to do cubs fans a favor. Signings like these allow the cubs fans to think that they are going to be good, when history has shown this will most likely be the case. So don't be hatin the haters. We are trying to help you.

because they were afraid to put up the money for the best player in the free agent market. the yankees should have kept him in the first place. no one wanted to pay the 40-40 man, so the cubs shelled out the money for one of the most best long ball players in the game
