Whilst at the supermarket today I noticed a woman get out of her car, lock it, and go shopping. She had left two young children asleep in the back of the car unattended. On reflection, I now wonder whether this was legal to do so. (In the UK)

I think Social Security (UK) would make a case against the person who left them in the car unattended. Probably rated as some form of child neglect.

I imagine it is legal. You leave young children alone to sleep at home. If the children were animals, however, I expect there would be any amount of people ringing up the RSPCA and complaining. The UK is a society with very twisted values (I'm British).

Hi,
Absolutely NOT !!! That is reckless endangerment !! If the authorities were to have found those children locked inside of that car......she would have come back WITHOUT HER CHILDREN being where she left them ! I simply can not understand how a mother could put her children is such danger. It really angers me when I see these ...so called mothers.... not taking overly protective measures to insure their children's safety. I was not blessed with children. And it just breaks my heart because I would have been a wonderful mother. The next time you see something like that.....report it to the proper authorities. What if some weirdo got into that car and took those babies ?? I shudder to think of what could have happened to them.

This is bollocks. We were left in the car all the time as kids. Admittedly never for very long, but long enough to mess with the stereo, beep the horn, etc etc. We used to get left in the house alone too while my mum went gallivanting but that's another story!

And American authority always over-reacts...

Legally, the woman has no offense leaving the kids inside the car but when something happened to the kids just like death, she is liable for two (2) counts of homicide due to negligence.

Depending upon the temperature, this could be a
life and death situation. I don't admire anyone who
leaves their kiddies in an unattended car. If it isn't
illegal, it should be.

It does depend on what the local law says.

I know that where I live, you can ring the police and then smash the car window to free the child/pet.

I only know that in the United States, if you see that you need to call the police. It is not legal and it is abuse on those children.
