My grandson in a little over 3 months old (14 weeks) he is taking an 8 ounce bottle every 2-3 hours. Do you think it would be okay to give him a little thin rice cereal off a spoon before bed?

Umm I never said in the bottle I said thin off the spoon, I raised 5 kids and times have changed. Her MD said she could give him cereal at 4 months. I was just wondering if 2 weeks early would hurt? He is a big boy!

I appreciate your concern over allergies. When I was raising my little ones the MD said to only introduce 1 new food item a month until about 10months old and to start with rice cereal it is the easiest to digest. LOL I never heard of not being able to have grains until 10 months old. I challenge that one. I am not giving him a loaf of bread. Do you have a link on that info.

I have read never in the bottle it can lead to childhood obesity.

NO! Don't start solids until about 5-6months. Their little bellies can't handle solids yet. Not to mention he still probably has the tonque thrust reflex and won't be able to get it down anyway, he'll just be pushing it back out of his mouth with his tongue. The earlier you start solids, the higher the chance of the child having allergies. Don't rush it, wait for solids he's probably having a growth spurt (they have them at 3wks, 6wks, 3mths and 6mths)

ETA: Ugh don't put cereal in the bottle... If the baby is hungry, all he needs is formula, or maybe he's just over fed. 8oz is a lot, my baby is 8.5months old and she still only drinks 6oz bottles.

**WHen I mentioned not putting it in a bottle I know you didn''t say that but one of the other posters below did that's why I said it.

First, she should be able to sit supported and hold her head fairly steady, so she can be an active, rather than a passive participant in the feeding process. Second, she should be able to turn her head away to let us know when she has had enough (and we parents should be developmentally sophisticated enough to believe her when her body language tells us 'no more'). Third, she should be at the stage where she wants to be part of the meal, anticipating the spoon, giggling, and having a fine, messy time with this solid stuff

If you put these signals all together, you usually come to the age of 3 to 4 months of age, which is when many pediatricians, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend starting solids with your baby. Until that time, the universal recommendation is that the only food your baby should receive is breast milk and/or iron-fortified infant formula

4-6 months: introduce single cereals once a week, usually in the sequence of rice-oats-barley-wheat. (Since baby doesn't know that there are sweets out there, we don't need to hurry things up and start with cereals and fruits at this time - they'll come soon enough.)

Go with your instincts.

And yes--the pedi's nowadays do say to wait til at least 4 months. But some still say 6 months. Our pedi told us that if they can hold their head up good, good posture, and sit well in a high chair/booster...(ya know--not floppy or slouching) to go ahead at 4 months. If that is the case, I really don't think 2 wks will matter AT ALL. My kids are still pretty young (1, 2.5 and 4)....I gave kids cereal by spoon around 9-10-12 wks depending on how each kid was doing. The first couple weeks was just them tasting it, texture....etc. It wasn't much, lots gets pushed out by their tongue. I prefered morning til they got the hang of it. And a little older. Anyway, my pedi always told me to go with my instincts.

This one is SOLELY for the parent to decide. Drs say to wait til about 4 months. I started my son on cereal at 3 months. I mixed it in a bottle (one that I did not like well, and cut the nipple hole a little larger) and that was his bedtime bottle (he slept WONDERFULLY). If u do chose to feed off a spoon, I would be prepared for a mess and some frustration. It is up to the parent on this like I said. Good Luck!

Cereal or other solids are not recommended until 6 months of age. Babies this young could develop food allergies(3 month old)
Check with the pediatrician in regards to cereal. I fed my last son cereal at 3 weeks old with no problem.

first of all, I think he is drinking too much milk for his age. He can cereal safety at 4 months just for your sake, but people give cereal to newborns. For a baby his age he should be drinking 4 ounces to 5 1/2 ounces.

Yes its fine. My kids were 2 months when they started eating cereal from a spoon. Just use your judgement. The only downfall is constipation which can be resolved with a tablespoon of dark corn syrup for each 4oz of formula. repeat once a day until bowel movements are normal again.

You should wait until he's preferably 6 months, but 5 months is OK. I would just stick with the bottles.

good lord, half the people who answered your question are crazy and nosy! yes they say that giving them cereal too early can cause allergies. however, the real reason is because sometimes giving babies cereal too young is a choking hazard because their swallowing reflex isn't developed enough for anything besides milk. it's your decision. if he's drinking that much, i'd say try it.
