Call your local police department, they will hold it for a few weeks, if no one claims it, it will be returned to you, however if someone has reported it lost or stolen [the bank the purchased it from, will have a record], you could get in trouble for trying to use it, finders, keepers dos not apply to the law.

Always remember - Honesty is the best policy AND The truth will always prevail. Many a times we did something that we think we will get away with, only to find that the truth surfaces sooner or later and catch up with us. It's not worth it! The owner probably have made a report about the missing check! Try cashing it and you face the consequences.

American Express, probably not. The reason people get them is so that if they are lost or stolen they can be cancelled then replaced.

I'm sure there is a number on it that is traceable. Maybe you can call AE and ask them. Make sure you ask for a supervisor and get their name.

Do not use it! It is really dangerous to get yourself into something you don 't really know about.
