They work fine if you follow the water change instructions! I used the 7day blocks for about three months until I could get decent settings on the auto feeder devices that one person referenced.
I've found a neat sneaky trick about using the blocks! My guppy fry grow twice as fast if I dump one of those blocks in the tank! It doesn't even need to be in the breeder to get the boost.
OK 'experts' start thumbs downing me!(idiots)

I've used these a couple of times though I would give it a miss if you're only going away for the weekend. Usually fish can do just fine for even a week without food. So dont worry about it. However having said that I would add that I have never had any problem using these feeders.

If you're leaving for only 3 days, you can give the feeder a miss. The fish will be fine without food for 3 days.
If you really want to buy an auto feeder, my advise is to get it a few days in advance and run it for a couple of days before you actually leave. You need to test the feeder to fine tune the amount it'll drop and see if the interval setting is accurate.

Don't bother. They just mess up your tank. Fish can go a while without eating (at least a week). It much better not to feed them than to mess with a "weekend feeder". If you really feel you have to feed them, buy an automatic fish feeder. It sits on the the side of the tank and distributes food at set intervals.

Depends how long you'll be gone.
Our fish get fed twice a week with normal fish food and they were even fine with once a week only on weekends. The fish feeders are great. depending on how many fish you have aswell. I suggest that you do use the fish feeders because they release the food slowly and don't poison the water. Good Luck!!!

I'd leave them without food for that short amount of time. Fish are fine for over a week without food. Those feeders tend to pollute the water and can cause more damage than good.

I have a hoard for weekend fish feeders. I mainly use them when i run out of food and can't get to the store. They are fine! The only difference between them and the food you give your fish now is that they are so release...releasing food slowly over time.

yes. I have a beta fish and when I left on vacation, i put one of the week long feeders in his tank. I think they work very well, but dont put rocks, sand, pebbles, etc., in the bottom of the tank or the food will just sink into the rocks and your fish will have no way of getting it. They do work very well though, in a tank with only water.

I have used one of those. I used one, for 2 fish. I believe it'll tell you on the package, how many fish one tablet will feed.

well...you could buy one of those at a pet shop like Petsmart or Petco. Some of them could last for a week!! It depends on what you want!
