Ok, Im having my first Thanksgiving at my house. It will be small, but Im trying to do everything right. I have everything under control, execpt Im not sure on how long to cook the turkey.... I believe I heard an hour for every 4 pounds? Is this right? I have a 20lb turkey so 5 hours? And how about temp? I know I sound stupid but I just have never cooked a turkey before.

according to the Betty Crocker Cookbook my grandma gave me when I moved out, a 20 lb turkey should cook about 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours at 325 degrees. Get a meat thermometer and shove it into the thickest part about then and it should read 185 degrees. After you take it out of the oven. You;ll want to let it set for about 15 min before you start carving it up. Be super careful pulling the turkey out of the oven, especially if you use one of the disposable aluminum roasters.... that bird will want to slide around in those juices , the roaster will sort of fold and crease and pour hot turkey juice and before you know it the whole damn thing is on the floor (uh....yeah, thats first hand!) Thats for a completely thawed , stuffed turkey. Be sure to allow plenty of time to thaw the turkey...pull it out now (Tues ) and put it in a paper bag folded over. it'll thaw slowly and evenly. Or you can wait til tomorrow night and fill up the sink with water and thaw it. Remember to set the alarm to get up and stuff the turkey and get it in the oven. Good luck and enjoy

Cook your turkey up to 170 degrees and then let it rest for 30 minutes and it will continue to cook up to 180 degrees (by rest I mean to take it out of the oven). Use your thermometer in the leg and the front breast to get 2 readings to compare.

also use a website like epicurious.com to help you with the poundage to cook time for your turkey. Also, don't worry, you will do great as long as you just take a little time to preplan your turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving!
