It depends what you want to do with your computer. Macs are used a lot in the professional world. They're simple to use and very reliable. Very few viruses or compatibility issues. Everything just works with a Mac.
If you're looking for something that is pretty universal, a PC is probably the better choice. The whole world really runs on Microsoft and everything is pretty much made for a PC. It's possible to find substitutes to do similar actions on Macs, but they are often unstable or over priced... If you want to be an average computer user, I would suggest using a PC, if you're looking to get into some alternative computer usage, I would check out Mac.

You'll attract a bunch of fan (zealots?) with this question.
Since both have fans, both are good enough for many purposes.
Watch out for a few myths:
- Macs are not by definition more expensive (historically it's true, the difference is nowadays nearly gone for comparable hardware)
- Macs do have viruses (but FAR less for now), an increase in popularity and arrogance of advertising, shops, and fans might change that. No modern operating system is immune to viruses. Sokeep an eye out for problems, and perhaps insist on AV protection (although it's still hard to buy) [Mac fans will deny this vigorously (and probably press man thumbs down just for that alone), but consider a bad piece of malware hitting the streets, do you want to go and seek who has AV software for your Mac, try to install it, seek updates for it at that time, or do youo want a AV vendor software ready to be updated and mitigate the threat for you as soon as the AV vendor can produce an updated signature?]
- PCs are not faster (they use very similar components such as the sameCPU, same graphical processors, etc.)
That leaves:
- Go to a Apple store if you have one close by, they let you play with a machine for a long while, see if it's something for you or not.
Since you are in doubt:
- Macs can run windows, (booting ti or runnign virtual machines for it)
- machines not made by Apple cannot run MacOS X legally (it's against the terms of the license of MacOS X to do it, even if it would work all that well)
So you have a save bet by goign for the mac even if you are going to use windows. The only drawback is that you need a license of Windows.
Success!

The best thing about Macs is what Best Helper said -- there are hardly any viruses, so you are a lot safer online. Another Plus for Mac is the OS, it is more stable than Windows.
The disadvantages are the relatively smaller universe of software applications for the Mac vs the PC. And, you may notice that Macs are more expensive ( less competition, I suspect )

****, you're brave to ask this.
Don't listen to any mindless raves from either Mac or PC fanatics, look at people who point out good & bad of both.
PCs:
Slightly better processing power
COMPATABILITY with a much larger variety of software
They have better compatability with most others
Higher Market Share
Can be difficult to learn
More Viruses
More Choices/ Complicated for begginners
Good choice in quality/good price range
Freeware!
Overall Compatabilty and Variety of software!
Mac:
Easier to learn
Less (some say no) viruses
Less choices on software
Less choices on hardware
Great for graphics / video
Can get pricey
Great for begginners, but limited choices and compatability
Personally, I love PCs, but they aren't for everyone. Look at what best suits your needs.
Do LOTS of research

they miht advertise sayin the mac is better, but pcs are alot faster, like if you bought a mac and dowloaded programs, then got a pc and downloaded the same programs, the pc would work faster and would be able to hold more programs then the mac without becoming slow.

PC. a MAC costs too much in comparison, and is no better. If it is safety you are seeking, use a pc with linux.
