not good ,
times have changed ,when i was young hunting was a manly thing.
when i was young,i was a trapper for skins my self once for a year on a Rocky mountain ridge, and hunted a lot for food.
I have also hunted in Africa ,but always because i was hungry
but in that time i learned, that animals alive are much more beautifull, and i learned to apreciate nature
we should be teaching the youth about conservation nature instead
they can still go out into the wilds, lots of fresh air ,but they can learn something instead ,about biology .the flora and fauna ,instead of learning how to stalk and kill.
so a camara is far better to shoot with than a gun,and nobody can get hurt, check how many people get wounded or killed by hunting accidents ,i once saw a guy shoot his own horse tied to a tree ,because he was convinced it was a deer.
the professional hunters that I have known have all turned to Nature conservation, because it is disapearing so fast.there just is´nt that much to hunt anymore ,and there are a heck of a lot more people around who would like to shoot something.

Yes hunting is a good way to teach a young person to take responsibility for their actions, it is also a way to learn to appreciate nature and if done right it is a good way to teach them that it is not the kill, it is the pursuit and skill involved in finding and harvesting game. Young people should learn more about the sport of hunting before they are allowed to carry a gun though. I know I am glad that my grandpa and dad taught me how to safely carry a gun before they would ever let me actually do it. I have a good record 51 years and have never harmed a human being.

I think it depends on if the kid is interested in the sport, and what the point of view of the family is on the sport of hunting.
My dad took me hunting, and I rather enjoyed going out and spending time with everyone that went. It was a big weekend for our family (uncles, cousins, etc), and I had fun. But as time went on, I lost interest in the sport of hunting. I think it is necessary for the control of the animal population (in WI here we have issue with the deer having "cronic waste disease", which is a disease like "mad cow" that affects deer. It is caused from the deer being heavily populated, and it is painful for the deer. Hunting them thins out the population, and keeps the cwd in check. And yes - it shows the "art" of hunting for your food and having to do all of the fun stuff, like gutting and cleaning the animal (yuck!!). And so many other things are done during hunting, like tracking, hunter's safety, and so on.
But it is a personal choice. So I think the choice should be made by those that are directly involved. And PETA should definitely stay out of it.

May be a good way to teach responsibility. Responsibility on how to handle a weapon, and to provide food for the family!
