This year we have no money to spend on anybody. My husband has been out of work for way to long and we are trying to keep our heads above water. However, I do like people to know that we are thinking of them. Any ideas on christmas gifts without spending any money?

You bring joy to my heart as you remember your friends when you are on hard times...many don't. Simple gifts as some evergreens tied up with a bit of ribbon...doesn't need to be store-bought...You can use red food color on old cloth...or grapevines. Remember that it is not the value of the gift, but only an act of friendship. When I was younger, I had no money and I dearly wanted to give my teacher a gift...we were so poor...I had an arrowhead that I had found and it was the most precious thing to me and I gave it to him, expecting he would laugh at me. He didn't. We drifted apart and years later I learned that he asked to have the arrowhead clutched in his hands in his coffin. I was ashamed of my gift but now I am proud of it because it said words from my heart.

Christmas is so commercialized, that it makes those without the means to buy gifts feel guilty and inferior. However, those that are close to you and know your situation will understand. You might consider inviting them over for some appetizers and play some board games. You can have fun without spending a lot of money and after all, that is what Christmas is about, sharing time with friends and family.

I was going to say a homemade Christmas Card but others beat me to it. LOL! Those are the only Christmas Cards I save and use to decorate with year after year.

Also, the person who said to make the coupons for babysitting, cleaning, etc. had a great idea. I would LOVE a gift like that.

If you have a person with a child or children, offer them a day of free baby sitting or an evening, offer the kids a day at your house to have fun, take a nature walk, fly a kite....just fun things. If it is older people give them some free help around the house, working on their yard, painting, cleaning, sorting.....there are a lot of things people need that does not involve money, write it nicely and tell them all I have to give is of myself this year they will be touched!

Yes, just mail them a christmas card if you have some left over from last year. They will appreciate you remembering them at this time of year. Just your friendship means alot to them. I hope all things will turn out for you and your family, and may the New Year be better for you. I pray for you that things will get better too!

maybe just simple homemade christmas cards. as long as you have paper (i know it's childish but hey everyone loves cards made from paper and it's really the thought that counts) just simple cards shows that you are thinking of them, even when you don't have the money to spend on gifts.

For those with kids - a coupon to babysit so they can go out

For Aunts & Uncles - a coupon to help with housework or yard work

For Mom and Dad - a coupon to come over and make breakfast or dinner for them

Coupons will require you to put in some time, but the people will love the attention and thought.

Can you go to Big Lots and get a bunch of gift bags? Then give people small things you already own. Nice things that you don't necessarily want or need.

How creative are you? everyone appreciates baked goods, or you could get some sculpey or make some baker's clay and make ornaments for everyone. If you knit you could do scarves. I don't really think anyone will hold it against you if you do this or just go the card route- anyone who knows you knows you're in a tight spot and it would be really crass to hold it against you.
