Anyone remember this book from about 30 years ago?

I remember reading this book when I was 10 or so which would be 1972. It was about a character who's name was Leon and one point in the book had to do with the fact that if spelled backwards his name was Noel. I also seem to remember the book having something to do with the color purple. Any chance anyone has an idea about this?? I know it's a hard one, thanks!!

I'm not sure if this book is that old, I wasnt born in 1972 but it may have been reprinted in the 80's. Just a chance it could be it.
