Upper west side; is it safe and convenient to stay in a hostel in 101 street?

Is upper west side a good location for attractions and places to go? Is is convenient regarding proximity to attractions?

well is the price of the hotels really high...cuz if they are then it's probably a decent area....but I know that if you are going to the west side it's best to stay in the middle don't go too far north and don't go too far south.
