I usually like to create habits early- in this case all of my children have slept in their beds from day one. This baby is starting to not like his bed and would rather sleep in the swing. Do you think it is a bad idea to allow him to sleep in the swing or should I let him sleep where he is happy and lets everybody sleep?

He has one of those portable swings. He isn't sitting up, rather he is laying down like his carseat.

Part of me says sure--why not. Then part of me wants to warn you not to start habits. I created some bad habits with my second son due to circumstances like moving....and just having two kids 17 months apart, lack of sleep, desperation. My middle child used to fall asleep in the swing all the time--up to 4 months, you couldn't move him or he'd wake and it would be a long night, plus he detested his crib. He's the worse sleeper still. He's 2.5 and my 1 yr old sleeps better than him. I guess it is more--do what you got to do to get by...but try to get back to the routine. I do recall having a hard time at night with my eldest (at 8 wks old). That was when I started a real bedtime routine with her. Bottle, bath, book, sing, bed. She got used to it---has been sleeping thru the night since she was 6 months--she's 4 now. My youngest didn't go in the swing...it was packed up from a move. Good luck!

Mrs Amazing is right the risk is too great, the latest recommendation for car seats is not to let a child sleep for more than an hour and that is only if traveling in a car otherwise don't do it. A swing keeps the child in the same position as a car seat and that causes a risk of asphyxiation. It really isn't worth the risk, yes there are probably lots out there who say they have done it but do you want to be the unlucky one. Lie your newborn down flat to sleep.

It is not a good idea because there is limited movement for the baby and the head tends to fall to one side or the other when the baby is sleeping possibly creating muscle spasm or even blocking the esophagus. Can you try a bassinet or crib that has back and forth movement similar to the swing? Otherwise, ride it out with night walks with the baby until he is comfortable sleeping in his bed. It is the safest thing to do.

I do not personally think that this is a good idea. If everybody else is sleeping then how do you know that something won't happen while your baby is in the swing unattended all night. I'm not trying to be a smart ellick but that would worry me. Good Luck and if you do let the baby sleep in the swing make sure he is well secure.

I would let him sleep where he is happy. My baby who is about 10 weeks old now would not sleep in her crib at all for the first month and a half. She slept in her carseat by my bed or her swing for that time because the crib probably seemed to big and scary at first. She sleeps in her crib no problem now and has been for about a month. I would rather her feel safe and secure then lost and lonely in her big crib and her crying is probably not somethign you want to put up with all night e ither.

I wouldnt let my baby sleep all night in a swing mainly because of the position their head and neck goes into once sleeping! What I use to do was lay on the bed with him on my tummy and when he fell asleep put him in his crib. it may just take the baby a little longer to adjust to his bed than the others! Try sitting by his crib and rubbing his back- that always worked for me! Good luck!

I wouldn't. He could fall forward against the tray thing or something and you wouldn't notice if your sleeping too. Can you move him out of the swing once he falls asleep? I'd feel more comfortable letting hi sleep in a bouncy seat or infant carseat than the swing...

yes, I let my baby girl sleep in her swing, because she wouldn't stop crying in her crib. She slept in her swing nightly until she was 4 months, then, I'd let her sleep in her swing, and once in a sound sleep, move her to her crib, she'd wake up in her crib. She's now 18 months and never fusses when bedtime comes around. *** I have a swing that swings sideways and front-n-back.*** Make sure to keep him warm.

it is ok, but keep in mind that babies sleep less deeply when in something such as a swing due to the movement, so I would warn against making it an actual habit. God bless.
