x= -6 or x= 0

All three answers are correct, x=0, x=-6, and x=sqrt(6x)i

However, I'm guessing the context of this question Algebra, so that would throw out the latter answer which includes imaginery numbers. Once you get into Complex Variable, everything you once believed in goes out the window.

What's left is X = 0 or X = -6.

x=0 and -6

2006-11-21 14:28:34 · answer #5 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

x^2 = -6x
x^2 + 6x = 0
x^2 + 6x + 0 = 0
x^2 + 6x + 0x + 0 = 0
x(x + 6) + 0(x + 6) = 0
(x + 6)(x) = 0
Either x + 6 = 0
or x = 0
Putting x + 6 = 0
x = -6
Put x = 0
x = 0
x = -6, 0 are the two values of 'x' that satisfy this equation

x^2 = -6x

x^2 + 6x = 0

x(x + 6)= 0

x = 0 and -6

2006-11-21 14:29:31 · answer #7 · answered by Yazzy 1 · 0 0

x^2 = -6x
x^2 + 6x = 0
x*(x+6) = 0

so one of the terms or both need to be zero to make this true.

x = 0 and/or x = -6

Okay, all you need to do is divide both sides by x. By doing this you reduce the x^2 to x (because the x you divided by is to the first power). and when you divide any two variables you subtract the exponents that they have from one another. So by getting rid of the x on the side with -6, all your left with is -6. so x = -6.
