40x means 40 times the magnification
the "x" stands for the variable being multiplied by 40.
it can also mean to multiply in math.

40x = 40 times actual size, sometimes called 40 diameters.

The symbol x is the multiplication symbol.

2 x 3 = 6.

We read this as 'two times three is six.'

Thus 'x' means times.

40 x means 40 times the original size.

'x' is nothing but the multiplier with th original size. As u have seen in CD writers the speed is written as 52x. The 'x means here is that 1x=150Bytes/sec.... so 52x means 52*150Bytes/sec.. this is termed as writing speed. Similarly here also .
