Because he was found to have vision problems, which led to his high walk total and control problems. After he started wearing them, he pitched great, so obviously they helped. Yeah, they are ugly, but I'm sure he'll take that for better results on the mound;)

A trite answer, I know. If the question is "why glasses, rather than contacts?" While I don't know Cabrera's specific situation, there are a number of reasons why glasses might be preferable: they might not make contacts for whatever eye condition he has, or contacts might irritate his eyes, or he doesn't need glasses except when he's pitching, or maybe he just prefers them.
