Someone told me that their father routinely put gasoline on a log, let it soak in, then put it in a woodstove in the house to start a fire. I think this is incredibly, unbelievably stupid, but they insist I don't know what I'm talking about. Have you ever heard of this practice?

Very dangerous....and stupid. Gasoline is too volatile. Diesel is much safer. We used it, all the time, to start the stove, in the old farm house.

Yes, that is horribly dangerous and reckless. Not only are the fumes very harmful in an enclosed area, it could cause explosion and a house fire. A firefighter would have a heart attack if they saw someone doing that.

Gasoline should actually never be used as a firestarter. A friend's mom poured gas on a pile of leaves and when she went to light the pile on fire, the fumes that were all around her ignited. She was in the hospital with burns on 90% of her body for months and is now disfigured.

YES!!!It is very stupid. when I was younger,by brother and I start a wood stove with gasoline and almost blew the house up. Thank God it didn't. But, it sure got hot in there. Dad really chewed us out for that and explained the reasons for not using gasoline. Don't do it.

You're right, it's dumb. Gas is too volatile and explosive. A better way would be wax, like Duraflame uses with their compressed sawdust logs.

I hope their homeowners insurance is paid up, not to mention the risk of killing everyone in the house.
