Some people simplify it more, by using the same greeting
both times.

* In Hawaii, when people say "aloha" it means hello and goodbye.
* If you wave and use no words, that also is clear.
* In some cultures, you fold your hands and bow as a greeting.
* There are also universal signs used by drivers with road rage
that communicate quite clearly with no doubt of the meaning.
I believe such greetings mean hello and goodbye at the same time.

It's called enclturation, we are taught what to say by our parents without our parents saying it. Kinda like stoppping at a red light. No one has told you to stop but you do, becuase we see others do it. that's why.
