Could be a nod of appreciation to lesbain extraordinaire k.d. lang.
More likely, it's a matter of where you live.

Gees, your question brings back some great memory's of my childhood, but in terms of the question, I've not really noticed this before. I'm not sure what country you are from, but we don't see a lot of that here in Australia among the Lesbian community. Most Lesbians here don't dress or appear any different to any other female, occasionally you may see a few with shaved heads, but not enough to make a generalisation.

I was at the Ohio Lesbian Festival this past summer. I saw three mullets the entire time. It's not that common. Stereotypes are very often wrong.

ACK!!!
You've committed the first sin in Grammar 101!
There, They're and Their...THREE DIFFERENT WORDS WITH THREE DIFFERENT MEANINGS AND USES! PLEASE LEARN THEM.
As a married adult, one would assume you knew the difference. What kind of example are you going to be to your children if you can't distinguish between these three basic words?
Now as far as your question, is there some reason why blacks like cornrows or dreadlocks? Is there some reason why rednecks like mullets or leathernecks like crew cuts? Why does Donald Trump like his overly hairspakled comb-over? Or old ladies like lavender hair?
Oh, they don't? Not all of them? Am I stereotyping?
What a coincidence!

I don't have one, and don't see all that many who do. I see more "rednecks" "hoosiers" and "trailer trash" that wear mullets than anyone else. those are all stereotypes. but, in my experience, most mullet wearers are not lesbians. it's not our "preferred" hairstyle
