It depends on the mutual fund. Exchange traded funds of which there are many, the minimum cost is that of one share of the fund. Funds with front end loads normally have a low minimum investment amount, about $500. Funds without loads normally have higher minimums, about $2,500 to $5,000. Some funds have very high minimums, $100,000 maybe even more.

If I had to guess the average, I would have to guess about $1,000.

I have seen many mutual funds that have a $3,000 minimum limit to open an account. This does not include the costs of loads, but you can find many passive management funds with no loads and low expense ratios. Check out Fidelity, Vanguard, or American Funds. They are the three biggest mutual fund companies.

It depends on the mutual fund. Right now BRKA is over $100,000 a share, but you can get an ETF run by a mutual fund company for less than $30.
