Actually, "Cookie Cutter" That definately wasn't the debut of Emilio Estevez, he is best known for playijng "Two-Bit" in the "The Outsiders", anywho, I am personanlly an S.E Hinton fan and I've read every single one of her books and seen all the movies....my opinion is that the movie "That Was Then, This Is Now" sucked huge balls. It had nothing to do with the book and the personalities and appearences weren't even the same as the book. For example, M&M is supposed to have Charcoal Black hair with War Orphan eyes to match, and in the movie, this kid has blonde hair and blue eyes, they even completely skip the part where the first go to the hippie house to look for him after he runs away. I personally loved the book and its my favortie next to "The Outsiders" but the movie doesn't even capture the feel of the book. I knew Copolla should've directred it, at least Rumble Fish was almost identitical to the book. But, to answer your question, the endings are different, I'll spoil the horrible movie for you. In the book, after Mark and Bryon see eachother in the jailhouse(it's been a few months since I read it last) Bryon just continues living his life, numb to the feeling of care, and in the movie, after their "Like a friend once said to me, that was then, this is now", Bryon takes some guys car and takes it for a spin, and he's all "happy-go-lucky". I personally only liked the movie because Emilio Estevez is a hottie, and because he really captured the character 'Mark'. Don't watch it, plus you can only get it on NetFlix, don't waste your money for a crappy movie.

I believe they both get killed but it has been a few years since I've seen the movie. I believe this was the directorial debut of Emilio Esteves though :-)
