Two wrongs don't make a right.
There is proof that wrongful conviction happens more often that we would like to think.

These links give many arguments. I hope this helps.

Personally, I am ambivalent in re to this. Yes, I DO believe in capital punishment--BUT--only if the proof of guilt is soooo overwhelmingly present and in your face that it is irrefutable and totally and objectively undeniable. I do not think that having a video tape of the crime is necessary at all but there have been too many innocent people put to death. There is a famous adage and I do not remember who said it but it goes like this--tis better that 100 guilty go free than 1 innocent be imprisoned". I do not think that is a good solution either. Our court system is so totally screwed up as well as fed and state laws that I think holding street court would be a better solution. I believe that justice would be better served if all of the hard facts and evidence were fed into a computer and let the machine spit out the result along with the punishment. Say goodbye to prejudiced juries, malfeasant DA's, crooked and completely inept defense attorneys. Someday, this will be the future and it will be better.

Here are some great reasons to be against it:

It destroys marriages
It destroys kids and families/ they suffer
Family loses the parents income
Devistates a child of inmate, they can turn to crime later in life
Other convicts fear death and then get hostile in prison
Againsts Gods will and commandments
Human life is worth nothing if we can detroy people
Who should have the power to take another persons life
Person may be innocent/bad trial/ no justice

Good Luck

Though I am not against it - perhaps the best reason I've heard is that studies show that places that have no death penalty have less crime than places that threaten criminals with it.

I'm not exactly sure why this is the case (I honestly don't remember now), but studies are always a pretty good thing. Not sure how they compiled their data though.

Good luck!

the most honest answer is probably "personal reasons" (i.e. "i am just opposed to killing another person" )

but...logically, there are also a few:
1. humans are prone to making mistakes....if you make a mistake and convict the wrong person, killing them prohibits you ever "correcting" the jury's mistake.
2. killing is often associated with revenge, and revenge is not the intended purpose of the american criminal justice system.
3. removing people from society "permanently" can be accomplished by life imprisonment and/or banishment to a penal compound.
4. life imprisonment is less expensive, on average, over the life of a prisoner, than execution.

in my opinion i think that the punishment should fit the crime. another words if a person shot someone 13 times then they should be done the same way, if a rapists raped 23 woman then he should be raped 23 times. not sure if that made since but its my way of thinking anyways!!!

Murder rates go up in states with capital punishment, go down if they ban it and then go up again if they reinstate it.

You, Mike, might be falsely accused and executed when you are actually innocent.
