He bought a foreign religion to England and therefore he would more likely be foreign. During this time we were a nation of foreigners anyway. The real natives were driven out by then anyway. So we are all not English and St George would represent us better than a Celt would anyway.

St.George is patron saint for quite a few countries.. including Russia. I don't know why either.
