I agree neither race nor religion should be used to divide or to blame, but I think there are good ways to use these both types of identities to organize people in working groups to solve social problems.

Race and religion don't have to mean anything divisive. These groupings have merely been abused by political forces to stir up conflict to keep people subjugated. As long as there are lawsuits, there are lawyers who profit. As long as there is crime, the prison complex makes money for contractors. As long as there are parties competing for power, there is money made in selling airtime and ratings. So our commercial media and system of representation benefits from unresolved conflict. The ugliness comes from political and economic competition; not from race or religion itself.

Race and religion can equally be used in a positive way to organize people along common cultural interests and fields of study, as in a university system that studies different types of issues. See also the Center for the Healing of Racism, and the guidelines used for Dialogue on Racism:
http://www.houstonprogressive.org/CHRguide.html

The Center recommends never using the word "racist" since that only implies negative blame; but there is nothing wrong if people identify themselves along lines of race or religion if that helps to address and resolve certain issues facing that group in order to better the human condition.
