It's all of the things you mentioned.
I love them because there is no other band that sounds like them.
They took the essence of At the Drive-In, and just went to another level.
A lot of bands have tried to do the whole 'multi-genre' thing, but Mars Volta is leagues above everyone else.

I must admit, TMV is an amazing group. This entire year of '06 has disappointed me in terms of new albums: a lot of my favorite artists put out new albums that were all crap. The only band who stayed awesome and put out a CD with a lot of amazing tracks and didn't stray was TMV. I thank them endlessly for that.

MV has a shitty sound, however the lyrics are still amazing.
In your list how could you not mention the lyrics? The writing style is completely original from what anyone else is doing.
