I would say Jason Kidd, even though he can't shoot.

Iverson is kind of a point guard, but he's a shooting guard as well... actaully, he's a throwback to a time when a guard was a guard, before specialization created "point guards" and "shooting guards".
Iverson can play both guard positions, one of the few players in the NBA right now who can.

Gary Payton has been to 3 NBA finals, winning one of them (although he wasn't the main PG on his title team, Miami last year). Payton previously played in the 96 finals with Seattle (lost to Bulls) and with the Lakers (lost to Pistons). I think I'd rather have Kidd on my team than Payton.

You can have T-Mac...he's never won ANYTHING. All flash, no substance. He's also one of the stupidest players ever to play the game (one of the reasons he doesn't win, despite his phenomenal physical talent).

Steve Nash is the best point guard in the NBA right now...and has won the last two MVP awards...I just can't extend his greatness back 10 years, so overall, I'd go with Jason Kidd.

Steve Nash. His team has been the best offensive team every year for the past 5 years. A.I. is better at defense and scoring, but Nash gets his whole team involved and makes all the players around him better. There is a reason he is the 2x MVP, and will be high in the voting again this year.

But don't get me wrong, Jason Kidd, Gilbert Arenas and Tony Parker are great point guards as well, and deserve a lot of credit.

So from 1996 to now who has been the best.
The names to think about is Gary Payton and Jason Kidd
Pick either one and you won't lose. Gary isn't as productive today because he was in the league like 5 or 6 years before J-Kidd but at there best, though I love J-Kidd, I would pick "The Glove"

i would have to say jason kidd, steve nash may be great as of right now, but jason kidd has been doing the same thing for his whole career. Steve nash has only been doing it for a couple of years now, but jason kidd has just been piling up triple doubles through the years, i believe he's at around 70 or 80 something. Whatever the number may be i believe its tops in the league among active players.

T-mac has the ability to play point but not even close to being one. tweety I disagree, t-mac is not stupid his very smart. And all of you are naming the points that get mensiond all the time but it seems you are all missing the true point or in this case what is called the pure point. the point is that a pointgaurds main job is to get the ball to the person with the hightest percentage shot, that would be rafer alston. who avreges 9 assist a game, and last year he got 7assist with a team that was impossisble to get an assist off.
