This time of year, the Salvation Army is a great place to volunteer. Being a bell ringer is fairly easy and also is for a great cause. Other than that, you can volunteer at a homeless shelter, a hospital, convalescent home, or retirement home just to name a few.

Nursing homes love good volunteers as do hospitals and other places where aged and/or sick people need extra help. Something as simple as taking a cart with tea, coffee, juice, and water around to the rooms to make sure the people get something to drink gives them a visitor and a chance to get refreshment in between meals. Going to visit and read to them or play checkers is something they enjoy, too. Some places have a library where they need volunteers to check out the book and reshelve ones that are returned. Call ahead and ask to speak to the Activity Director of the nursing home to see what volunteer opportunities are available. Taking some lens cleaner and some cloths and going around to all of them who wear glasses and giving them a good cleaning is greatly appreciated as they can see better when their glasses are clean. The staff doesn't have time to do things like that for them and many of them can't do it themselves. You will enjoy getting to know many of them; they make wonderful friends. You will also make their last days more pleasant.

Join Friday Night Live, a club that's probably on your campus...they do all kinds of community service. Also I have students who volunteer at local elementary school's after-school programs, the humane society, Boy Scouts of America and some season activities in the community. Also, I hear that Key Club does a lot of CS as well. Good luck and have fun!

What are your interests? Doing something that is related to your interests or what you are interested in pursuing as a career later on is something you should consider. If you don't know what kind of volunteer work relates to your specific interest(s), post another Q, and we'll help you pick one.
