The ethical thing to do would be to tell her you're letting her go, and to explain why. Then let her work a period of notice so that she has time to find a new job. Offer her a reference, or even go so far as to helping her find new employment.

What do the labor laws in your state dictate in this situation? The state I live in is an "at will" state, meaning that an employer can dismiss a worker without specific cause. I would tell her that you will need to let her go, and then give her two weeks notice.

tell her you have had it up to your neck with her tardiness poor performance and that as of today she was no longer needed.
