It promotes violence, hate, hate to woman, no respect, hate to police and people trying to protect us, what do you think about rap music?

Love live Rock n roll

Yes I consider rap to be music. Do I consider it to be good music? Not really. I don't like rap like that. There are only a few rap songs I like:
Pullin' Me Back - Chingy
Lose Control - Missy Elliot
Run Away - that new song out. I think that's the title. I don't know who raps it though
Golddigger - Kanye West

Ya know, along those lines (look at the lyrics. Notice there's not explict examples of anything)

Hang on there, fella...you're a bit off on some parts of your question. Rap is a form of music AND it's also a form of poetry. The rap that you're referring to in your question is more hardcore, gangsta rap. Try listening to rappers like A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Common, Mos Def, Queen Latifah even. Artists like the ones that i listed are rapping about the complete opposite. More and more rappers are following Kanye West's lead and doing more political rap--so rap is constantly changing. There's more to rap than what you see on mainstream videos. You'll see that the lyrics actually tell a story, it's written in time it's measured and not only Black, inner-city guys do it.

Well I do generally agree with your characterization of it as far as content. And I don't think the majority of it qualifies as music (wish I could remember the quote - one of the great living Jazz legends stated outright that it did NOT qualify...)

Anyway - it is certainly an act of free speech, and so I do not advocate banning it.

At the same time - I think an investigation into the sociological elements that have made such music popular would be prudent.

Is it a matter of particular socio-economic factors, unique to the last few decades, that have encouraged an atmosphere of hate mongering?

I would say yes, and I suspect that a study would find that the steady decline of the middle class, the steady decline in the standards of living across both the middle class and lower class, and the blatant flaunting of the increasing wealth of the upper class may partially the cause.

I think thats a pretty ignorant generalization. First of all...as long as it is recognized by the Recording Association, then yes it is music.
Second of all, the stuff you see on MTV and BET or hear on the radio is a very small percentage of what rap music is out there. Not all rap music is as you described. There is A LOT of positive rap music out there. But, that is not what is making money for all the rich white guys who own the video channels and radio stations. THEY are capitolizing off the culture so they can make money.
Everyone is entitiled to their own opinions. No one said you had to like rap music. Thats why there are so many genres of music out there. But, at least do a little research before you start making ignorant generalizations like this because it is not at all accurate.

I think anything with a beat should be considered music. I mean all different types of music have proven to promote the same things you described in your question. There is hate and disrespect to and from everyone in the world. So I feel like until the world is peacefull enough not to have all this hate and disrespect toward each other, there is no sense in taking any form of music out of the picture which is intended for entertainment purposes. Peace!

Not all of it. Lots of rap is socially meaningful, respectful and relevant, but most big music companies only promote what they know that (mostly white) consumers will buy. This makes it harder for rappers with important things to say be heard, because they must compete with corporate-sponsored rappers, who, again, would not be selling albums if the audience didn't want them. And most of that demographic is - this has been proven - white. Besides, it sounds like it's the content, not the style, of the music you've heard that offends you. Don't mistake the medium for the message. :)

Sorry to those "haters" out there... and although I don't like a lot of the rap out there, I happen to like a lot of it, too!

rap music

a style of popular music, developed by disc jockeys and urban blacks in the late 1970s, in which an insistent, recurring beat pattern provides the background and counterpoint for rapid, slangy, and often boastful rhyming patter glibly intoned by a vocalist or vocalists.

Also called rap.

I guess that should answer the question without having to add whether or not you like it.

I think it is vile and disrespectful. There's too much profanity. And since when does singing qualify as talking to a rythm? I hate it, and if I had my way rap would be BANNED! Any intelligent and caring parent would not let their children even speak of it. Who wants to hear about sex, drugs, and violence? Like there isn't enough of it in the real world already!
