To be honest it could be one of at least 100 reasons.
Here are some of them.
1-no gasoline in tank. 2-water in the gas tank 3-no spark due to bad wires, bad distributor, or coil. 4-clogged or bad carburetor or fuel injectors, which ever it uses. 5- clogged fuel filter 6- bad spark plugs 7- dab ignition switch 8- bad wire at ignition switch.9- bad starter 10- bad wire to starter OR grounding of starter 11- bad battery12- foul pistons due to bad oil rings, 13- no compression due to bad head and or gaskets. 14- bad computer if it so has one.
so much more could be wrong, best have a mechanic look at it.

might have been more helpful had i know the brand, type and system it uses, jet/diesel or what.
A CAR IS NOT JUST A CAR, THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME.

CHRYSLER OR DODGE for example they have much trouble with pickup coil in distributor

need engine make/model , how did it run before this happened, did you get it serviced recently?

My story: I had my oil changed at a Wally world once. they asked if I want to have my air filter checked free of charge, I said "sure" I knew it would not need one, but what the hey. After word I pulled out of the parking lot and stopped at the stop sign, the engine died, I thought that was a little strange, it started right back up, got home, but had problems with starting it and the engine warning light coming on. and engine dying at odd intervals I looked at the engine and didn't notice anything right away... but then I looked a little closer and found that the air filter canister wasn't installed right. so it had a vacuum leak that was causeing all my problems.
Sometimes just getting your oil changed can really screw up your week.

Sounds like your IAC Idle Air Controll its a sensor that tells the computer of your car how much to give it...if this is dirty or messed up you will have to just keep your foot on the gas. It needs to be cleaned or buy a new one. This happened to my 97 Dodge Intrepid Sport.

Do a tension attempt of the gas equipment first. positioned a guage on the line formerly the gas injector or carberator and consider the strain. I beleive the pump will pressurize the equipment once you positioned the substantial on. If it would not pump to spec then you definately will understand. The filter out could be ok.
