I would listen to them and not give any advice unless they ask for it. I would not judge them. I would give them a hug. I will sit there quietly and let them ramble and not think they are crazy. I would accept what their reality is and not try and make them see that it is wrong. I would buy them a case of Kleenex. I would cry with them. I would stay up all night with them. I would tell them that if they should die how much I would miss them. I would say to them that the tunnel may be dark but somewhere in there is a tiny pin point of light in that tunnel. I would tell them all the great things about them that make them special and unique.

(1) I sent care packages to cheer up a friend I met online who was feeling bad. It helps get past the rough spots to know someone is thinking of you no matter how far away you are.
(2) I'd open myself up to communicate, whether by email or in person, or whatever might help my friend talk it out or be less afraid of going through a depressed state, letting that person know that it's okay, sometimes the brain needs to heal itself by shutting down and cutting off extra stimulus in order to focus inward. I compare it to meditation, sometimes the mind wants to be in a depressed state to work through things quietly that way.
(3) When talking doesn't help, I'd ask for prayer support. I have a friend whose condition was so bad that nothing would help. (I think the depressoin was made worse by starting and stopping sleep medications, which caused dreams to build up into nightmares and night terrors.) Another friend of mine prayed for peace of mind, to help get on the right track. So sometimes healing prayer can get rid of the spirit of depression so the person can focus on working out the rest. For prayer support, the healing ministries I recommend can be contacted at:
