how can you tell if a beta fish is a guy or a girl?

the guys have very long, fancy looking fins. the girls are very plain looking, they look almost like a regular fish.

You can easily tell by just the following: the male betta has bigger and more colorful fins then the female betta.

Generally, the males have the long flowing fins and colorful bodies. The females are more of a plain color and have short fins.

However there are some types of bettas (males) that will look like females.
