It depends on how wide the fabric is...probably 2 1/2 to 3 if the fabric is 54" wide or less if the faric is wider. Also will depend on which way the pattern goes.

Depening on the PATTERN or the Print and the direction you want it to go. About 3 yards is enough. Depending on the size of the man. I always got 5 yard and made PJ long and Boxer shorts with drawstrings.

Measure his waist, his inseam (inside leg) and drop that about 6-8" for the "Box" to have some room, Measure the longest point from teh waist to the ankle on the outside of the leg, Measure the width of his leg and the largest part. There you go- actual measurements.

Then add 2" to each one of them, for the 1' allowance to everything. including the bottom of the legs, the pocket for the drawstring, so that won't effect the inseam..

Get a newspaper and Open it up tape it together and Draw out those measurements- Real size! Then Lay out your fabric, chalk the inside of the fabric ( not the pattern side). Measure it again before you cut.

Measure most and cut only once.

Best wishes!

I did use left overs to makea little drawsting bag to put them IN as a gift as well. Since it was already there.
Have fun!
