I think it depends on the family and the situation. If it's just a husband and wife, and she's in the kitchen slaving away while he's sitting there like a lump of poo, then there's something wrong with that. If it's a small family of mom, dad and kids, everyone should help. If it's a big gathering of relatives, generally the women like to gather in the kitchen to talk and the men can and should stay out. I personally think the TV should be off all together when it's dinnertime, but I'm a woman and decidedly NOT a football fan. But I definitely don't complain about it when I'm "company" at someone's house! Oh and the men should definitely wash up (after the game of course)!

Because that is how is should be!
Presumably you are celebrating Thanksgiving because it is a tradition. Well traditionally the founding fathers went out to work to earn money (or did hard manly labour like farming to sell things to earn money) for the family to live, and the woman tried to be a good wife: she had to cook the food because the man as at work earning money to buy it. Cooking was a hard task -nothing ready prepared or made - if you wanted bread you had to grind the wheat into flour and knead into dough. No was machines or dishwashers so if you wanted clean clothes on you, your man and children the woman would help at home. Back then men and women were COMPLIMENTARY - they each needed the other and both contributed to the welfare of each other and provided stable environments for children.
Nowadays women can go to work - often earning more than men with the same qualifications! Men do not need women to stay at home and cook as it is not a difficult chore - you can even buy ready meals in the West. There are washing machines, hoovers, irons so there is no justification why a woman should stay at home. They should also contribute by helping to eartn some money but that does NOT excuse them for being good wives and mothers by doing the tasks their foremothers did that they can now do much more easily.
You can be wise like asian women in the west who use technology to do make the tasks of being a good wife and mother easier (feeding your family nutrious food and creating a pleasant environment in the house) and using the time freed by technology to go to work to earn money to supplement the household income.
Alternatively you can complain, buy into feminism, get your man to do the housework and then instead of having a happy family that will see grandchildren and grow old together you can get divorced and perpetuate offspring that have no idea how to build stable loving family units. Your choice!
Finally no one forced you to choose to follow the tradition - if you choose it do it with a smile. Afterall if you are NATIVE American you are probably cursing the generousity of your ancestors towards the evil fork-tongued murderous white invaders who stole the land and murdered your family and friends.
If you are BLACK you shouldn't be celebrating - your ancestors did not get invited over for dinner by the native americans or white thieves. You were brought over to cook the meal ...after working 14 hours picking cotton not for money but just so you wouldn't keep getting whipped! Also if you hadn't stayed american your ancestors would have been freed 100 years earlier from slavery as it was abolished by England, Portugal, Spain a whole century before the US did so you really don't have a reason to eat turkey like the white americans now do you?

How many would really complain if you didn't cook Thanksgiving dinner? A TV dinner with turkey would probably be enough to fool most husbands.
Men are happy to live in filthy surroundings, eating off paper plates. The only reason any guy EVER cleans up is because they have a slim hope of bringing a woman home. Once married, the old habits return.
They may try to help around the house but guys have a different conception of "clean enough."

cause the women stay in the kitchen and gossip. men like me sit, without a thought in our heads, on the couch watching tv.
It's just the way it goes.
BUT! When the garbage needs to go out or the table and chairs need to be moved. You know who gets the call . . . THE MEN!

HAAA
HA HAH HAH AHAH
WHOOOO BOY - WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?
Not only do I do all the holiday cooking for my wife and family, I do the majority of the cooking during the week, spending almost entire days in the kitchen making meals, cooking and setting up bowls to be put in the freezer so all my wife has to do is get a bowl out of the freezer, nuke it, and she's got 1-2 servings of all SORTS of dishes that I cook. I cook the meals, I wash the dishes by HAND (I hate dishwashers, they never get the dishes clean), I clean the stove, the counters, organize the cupboards, clean and organize the fridge, and sweep and mop the kitchen floors..

That only happens if you let it! Tell the men to get up and help or they won't be getting any turkey (or disconnect the television cable- not only will they probably end up helping you, it'll be very amusing watching them all scrambling before the game trying to figure out why the tv isn't working).

In my house, I do the cooking and then I watch the kids while my wife and company help clean after dinner. Seems the men in you life are still living in the 1950's.
