After we replace the salt in our water softener we are all breaking out (like acne) for the first couple of weeks. Is there anything we can do, different type of salt, are we doing something wrong?

If you using the right type of salt, check with the neighbors, then all the softener does is condition the water by taking out the heavy minerals.
Turn the softener off for a few weeks, see what happens, experiment, then turn it on again and make sure everything is O.K. with the softener.
Have someone come out and check it out, clean it and charge it then see what happens.

Sounds like you are using too much salt. Try less and see if that helps.
