How can I keep my 3wk old to stay awake during the late evenings so she will sleep longer periods throughout the night? I try playing with her, talking to her, letting her swing & be in her bouncey.. I know babies need alot of sleep, this is my 3rd.. my other 2 always slept good through the nights.. I go back to work in 3wks, I need to get her on a schedule.

I think making a 3 wk old baby stay awake is a little much to ask of her. I think you should give her sometime to get into her own schedule. And have her sleep when she's tired, or else she'll be overtired and it will be torture. Try giving her a nice long bath if you want to prolong her wakeful time a bit, it's a soothing relaxing activity that won't over excite her.

Mine started sleeping through the night at around 8-9 weeks. I would say a 3wk old baby is still too young to try and keep awake or even get into a schedule. Once she gets older at around 6wks and older is when you will be able to get her in a schedule. In the meantime you are right, they need all the sleep they can get in order to grow. Depending on your husband's work schedule, you can get him to help at night by bottle feeding her. That way, you can have a few more hours of sleep.

I dont think your going to get her to stay awake. Even if you did, she will probably still wake up like she normally does during the night. Most wont start sleeping through the night until 6 weeks or later. . My first slept through the night, my second was around 4 to 6 months and then my third who is going to be 3 in a few days still wakes up a couple of times a night. He is the worst one ever. It was every 2 hours for the first Year, no matter what I did. Hopefully this baby for you isnt anywhere near like that., but it just may be harder to get this one to sleep like you want her too.

Let her take a medium nap a few hours before you want her to go to bed. Try a warm bath with play time. Avoid the rocking motion and cooing sounds. Keep the lights bright. Don't use things like the vacuum or fans. Constant noises like that help put them to sleep. Also, to get her to sleep longer, give her an extra ounce or two before bed. Make sure the room is warm enough (65-70 is what I keep my daughters at). Try swadling her if she flails her arms or legs a lot. If the extra food doesn't help try adding a teaspoon of baby rice cereal in her bedtime bottle. Hope that helps!
