I'm moving to Australia to study and i want to know what the people are like. I've moved around alot all of my life to different countries, mostly Latin countries and the US.... so I know how the US and Latin cultures are, and i know one thing for sure that my biggest struggle with Central Americans was the Machismo err I don't know the word for it in English, but that the men treat the women like trash. I hear that its like that in Australia, I've heard that the men are machistas, so I just want to know if its true and i would like to know any other things that are important or that you would think I need to know, if you have been/lived or are from Australia.

Ha ha to the guy above RE: the Barnsley comment. I'm originally from Yorkshire!! But we moved to NZ 17 years ago.

Aussies have a diverse mix of cultures, a lot like America and the Italian / Greek sector seems to have that macho attitude you were speaking of.

You should come to NZ instead - the kiwis are very friendly (but so are the Aussies really), but we are a lot more laid back over here. Both Aussies and Kiwis don't have all that PC bull you guys seem to have to deal with, but we do take our indiginous cultures very seriously. Most of us over here find American tourists a little arrogant, but if you make an honest attempt to assimilate yourself in to the culture, etc, you will be readily accepted.

The weather is hot most of the time (unless you are in Melbourne), and the beaches are glorious - the food divine.

I think you'll have a great time over in our neck of the woods.

Your moving to a country you've never visited - smart move Einstein.. keep them fingers crossed eh...

However, i've know some Australians, and New Zealanders over the years, and they are essentially just like your average british person, they just have less tolerance for ********, they dont hide behind social convention or political correctness - and I like that, a lot.

So you could equate them to white people from Barnsley, with a tan and a less stupid accent.
