Look for these books:
"In Search of Dracula: The History of Dracula and Vampires" and "Dracula: Prince of Many Faces" both by Raymond McNally and Radu Florescu
"The Vampire in Lore and Legend" by Montague Summers
"Vampyres: Lord Byron to Count Dracula" by Christopher Frayling
"Danse Macabre" by Stephen King
"The Blood Is the Life: Vampires in Literature" by Leonard G. Heldreth and Mary Pharr

I wrote a lot of papers about vampires in college!

Sounds like a cool project, Taz. I've gathered some info from which you might garner a few ideas. The original Dracula was not wholly fictional. Among a plethora of other pompous designations Prince Vladislav Ţepeş Basarab III or "Vlad the Impaler" (1431 - 1476 C.E.) secured the title, "Dracul." Later the title changed to the more familiar, "Dracula." Both derive from Latin and mean, "son of the Devil." The book that really popularized the modern vampire was of course, "Dracula" by Abraham (Bram) Stoker. But if you want more juicy info about the real Dracula for your history project, sans the bloodsucking, garlic and bats, then read Blood Prophecy by S. & J. Weatherton. The book's prologue provides a dark but factual glimpse into the sinister life of Vlad the Impaler....

Try to find resources on Vlad the Impaler as well as Slavic Folk lore.
