After reading some responses to my previous question, i was inspired.

Is it true that some people can't help ignorance?

I beg to differ.

The world has come pretty far with books, magazines, newspapers, activities, the media, the internet.

I'm almost 100% sure ignorance CAN and SHOULD be prevented, not accepted.

I'll admit it's a person's choice as to whether or not they should open a book or seek knowledge, but i also think those people should keep their mouths shut.

It's closed mindedness that should not be tolerated. If they don't know something....being open enough to learn about it is one thing. Refusing to learn is a whole other story.

Unfortunately.... we can't urge a closed minded person to open up. They tend to just dig their heels in and believe things they already know and refuse to open to new possibilities. This is when conflict occurs. Mostly because many of us feel it is our responsibility to 'teach them.' We can't.

So do we accept their ignorance? We either accept it or alienate ourselves from people that perhaps aren't willing to open themselves to friendship anyway. Is it worth the conflict that could insue? Hmmmm that's the hard part.

Each person has to decide for themselves.

i agree people choose to be ignorant. i talk to friends daily and usually find most people that are 1/2 way intelligent have learned to think outside the box -- the television box. i am shocked that people that speak english never read bbc or the guardian. if everyone depended less on the television and its warped views then the world would be a better place. unfortunately watching fox news or listen to rush's last broadcast is enough fact for them to draw conclusions and make death defying leaps in logic and consistancy. during the 2004 elections i thought people should be hanged if they only voted for reasons stated -- like voting for bush because he made the mess and he should clean it up. or i don't know what kerry is all about so i will vote for bush.
if you can't come up with a reason to vote perhaps you shouldn't. i guess when you have an education system that doesn't even teach you to write a sentence let alone comprehend logic you are asking for it.

On one hand I believe some people can't help being ignorant. Haven't you ever met someone and just knew that they were totally hopeless? That they didn't possess a single intelligent thought in there head?
On the other hand, you make a good point. There are plenty of ways for a person to educate themselves, but like you said it's their choice. Ignorant people are incapable of keeping there mouths shut, they just don't know any better.

By the way, nice avatar!

I agree with you about ignorance, it is a choice. We have no other choice but accept the choice of those who choose to be ignorant. Now, whether we tolerate the ignorant is a different story. I can't tolerate it at all. When I'm around ignorance I leave. If, I'm ignorant on a subject, I enlighten myself. I choose not to be an idiot. I can learn. Now stupidity, on the other hand, isn't a choice, some just can't learn, I can tolerate those, it isn't their fault.

You're right ignorance IS 100% preventable but we can not force the ignorant to learn & it's sad to say it's usually passed from one generation to the next. You might say, that, ignorance, in a sense, is LEARNED.

Good luck from one who chooses to die with intelligence.

There are some that can't accept that their view of things may be wrong. They will find any excuse to refute the information that is so readily available. What do we do with these kinds of people? I choose to state the obvious, and then ignore them if they continue. I am also willing to share information if someone seeks it. On a personal and professional level, I do not accept ignorance.

At what point does anyone stop being ignorant? When they have read all the books there is and possess all the knowledge there is? Man will always remain ignorant of certain things because there is no way man can achieve all knowledge or become all knowing.

I agree with you completely. Ignorance is learned. It's laziness to seek knowledge and be educated. Yet it's those who are the loudest, the ones wanting to be heard, yet they never make sense or have a point worth listening to.

You know, for someone who likes to hide behind avatars of famous good looking men, you are really deep. Many people who do not know, just WILL not know. Ignorance is not always by chance, sometimes it's by choice. There is none so blind as he who will not see.

Ignorance is certainly preventable, but not everyone is as enlightened as you seem to be . . . accept it when you are faced with ignorance, but do the only thing you can do . . . ignore it!
