My husband is in the marine corps. He has been physically abusive 3 thimes in the last 4 months. I have not reported this b/c he is an MP and I didn't want to stop the support we recieve from his income having 2 small children. (the children have never witnessed the physical abuse) But now that I'm ready to leave he claims he will get help. My question is if I file for legal seperation will the military help me get home (I'm 2100miles away)? I cant afford it on my own and I'm afraid to stay. i am sad to even come home from work these days. Am I trapped or is there help somewhere?

No, you are NOT trapped.

Abused dependents can be eligible for the Transitional Compensation Program. Family members of service members who have been separated or discharged or receive forfeiture of all pay and allowances because of domestic violence may qualify.

Because you mentioned that your husband is an MP, I understand why you'd be reluctant to go to the regular base law enforcement folks.

I suggest that you make an appointment at the base legal office. Explain that your spouse is an MP and that you do NOT want this to go through any regular notification procedures to the MP's. Get counseling on transitional compensation, ID card entitlements and household goods shipping entitlements.

If you can do so, I think the best time to make the appointment would be the 1st or the 15th (payday). You'll want to be able to tap some cash before reporting, just in case things get disagreeable.

I would also suggest that you get with the base hospital about this, so you can get counseling for the personal (as opposed to legal) part of this.

You've made a good start here by asking the question and seeking help. Keep on going. The Corps has plenty of resources to help you, you just need to contact them. Good luck.

First off, you need to talk to someone! I'm not sure if the military will help you move back home, as I remember that is for the service member. But I remember once (when I was in the USAF) the Red Cross helped me get a plane ticket to go to my grandmothers funeral. Can't remember the details, it's been too long ago, but you could try them. Being an MP in the Marines may be tough but it is no reason to be abusive, please talk to someone on base or off, maybe at your church. Can any family help you? Take care and I wish you the best.

First go to family services at the base closest to you. If you plan to separate from your spouse you can obtain legal help and retain lawyers at any military base close to you. Make sure you obtain the base lawyers first or else you have to go off base if your husband obtains base lawyers. Base lawyers can not represent both sides so it is important to secure base lawyers first. If you are in need of any finical assistance go to the nearest Navy Marine Corps Relief Society for assistance. NMCRS can help with rent and moving back to your home of record. Contact an abuse agency in your area. Please get help!
