The check engine light started blinking on my car today as soon as I started it. I also noticed a sputter whenever I would go to use the brake at first, and then it started when I accelerated as well.

My aunt used to work for a service dept and told me it could be fuel related (I did fill up the car today at around 12 n and the car was fine all day until about an hour ago when I started it, she was thinking maybe water in the tank?). It's also about 1000 miles over from needing an oil change (yes, I know, bad me! :-/)

What is going on? I know I have to bring it to a mechanic, and the guys around here are honestly crooks, so I want to be prepared as to what they could say was wrong with the car.

Any help is well appreciated.

I was also wondering how safe it would be to drive it 40 miles to the dealership...can it make it? Or should I try to find somewhere closer?

Every blink is another malfunction in the engine. It wont affect anything for now, and if you need to take it to a tech 40 miles away it will make it.

By the way, a diagnostics run on the computer SHOULD BE FREE (in my opinion) to get the malfunction code off of your car's computer. Any mechanic who charges for that is a cold hearted crook. Your best bet would be your local auto parts store. Some have hand held OBD-II Scanners who will scan your car's computer for free and tell you exactly what the problem is. Good luck!

Your check engine light should get attention:

Steady Light- needs to get taken care of soon

Blinking light- Bad immediate problem, needs service ASAP

Probally misfire, there gonna hook up a scanner to see what cars computer says. If has never had tune up, I would think that may be the issue.

generally when the CIL blinks it's an indication that one of the cylinders is missing (miss firing). Probably why its sputtering off and on. If there's an Auto Zone in your area they're pretty good with the free "check engine light" test. Good luck.

The vehicle needs to be scanned to retrieve the codes. Until that is done, this is all just a guessing game.
