If your website is an affiliate site, you will never get a higher ranking with the search engines unless you spend to have your site listed with yahoo or google or any of the other search engines. The reason is there is no difference between your site and the hundreds if not thousands of mirrored sites of the specific program you are marketing.
Now if your site is unique to your product alone, and you are not an affiliate this is a small sample of what you MUST do to improve your search engine listing.
In order for you to understand your customers, you must know what terms that they are using when searching for your peoduct. I am talking about specific key words and phrases. Once you are in your customers head, you have them as a captured audience.
Meta tags are important, but search engines have evolved into a more efficent machine, content now plays a hugh role in the search engine process. Do not over do your key words and phrases into the meta tags as the spiders will ignore you if all they see is the same words over and over again. Revelance is very important so your sites content must be relevent to the search terms and meta tags. Every month you must set aside one day to hand submit your site to the leading search engines and track which pages are working and which pages on your site are least visited. This is called behavioral tracking and is very important in understanding your market. This technique will also tell you where and what time your customers are arriving and leaving, page views, and what spider delivered them. From this information you can compile a history of your sites performance and optimize your site monthly. This is just the start of increasing your sites over all ranking.

depends on what search engine you want to be ranked, as each search engine has different formulas
MSN is the easiest to be listed on then Yahoo and Maybe Google
Optimizing your site can vary, making sure you have good content and rich and updating content, search engines will not even search you if the content is not updated
backlinking is a good way to get targeted hits as well as google relys on backlinking and is calculated in their seo formula
updating blogs and articles are a good way to be seen on search engines as well
proper keywords in your meta tags would be great and useful as well

When want your business in the Search Engine result at the top of the rank search with the keyword to business "roofs' , "bay area roofs", etc. You may create more back links to your site & also following things matter as 1. Tittle of your website when you want target the keyword for, 2. Use meta tags & description as you want to target the keyword for. 3. Content Marketing for your keyword.

Make sure you have meta Tags, otherwise they won't pick you up.
