The best way to find out depends on the situation. You see, you're not providing enough information.
For example: "Asking him", like some suggested, is not appropriate in MOST circumstances. If you are not close to that person...why should be honest with you??

You can't assume, just maybe ask him in a nice way. Because sometimes you just can't tell when someone is gay.. Try not to offend him either when asking, just try and be subtle and courteous.

The easiest way to ask and not offend...start off by asking, "Hey, can I ask you a personal question? You don't have to answer if you don't want to." If he says "Sure, go ahead" then by all mean, straight up ask him. If he says "No, sorry" then don't. If he says, "Well, we'll see if I'll answer" then ask him. Just starting off that way seems to make sense.
