The only way that could work was if the battery was not working due to lack of water. Adding water won't help without charging the battery but if it was barely low enough it might help spread out the electrolytes allowing the car to start.

wow, not salt water. if you pop your vent caps off you will see that it is filled with acid and water. if the water is more than a quarter of an inch from the top of the little slits in the side of the hole, you need to fill it with DISTILLED WATER. use a turkey baister or a funnel and be carefull because it is acid after all. be sure not to over fill or it will spill when you drive around( bad!) my grandma's riding mower just would not turn over, the battery was so dead that it woud just click when you turned the key. i took the batery inside to charge it when i remembered that it might be the water level, i poped the caps off and the electrolite level was almost down to the plates(bad!) i filled it up and (without charging it) put it back in the mower. it started right up with more than enough power and has been working fine ever since. (summer)
the water simply electrolosises and goes right out of the vent caps. if you use salt water, the battery will produce deadly chlorine gas when it charges(same with tap water) and will destroy the plates sooooo fast. I wouldnt try adding anything else than distilled water and battery acid(when that runs low...check with a hydrometer)

Go to NAPA and buy battery acid. The parts guys don't need to know that you are requesting sulfuric acid...H2SO4, a diprotic acid. But, be careful,it will react with your skin....burns like hell.

Water is electrically conductive, (which is what is usually in you battery cells) salt water is super conductive. You could try that but remember that salt water is also really corrosive.
