don't get a heater for your goldfish. they are cold water fish, and heating the water will kill them. they can live under frozen ponds, so your fish will be plenty happy in cold or room temperatures. kepp your tank/bowl away from windows where the sun will heat up the water. also, id you have a light, remember not to keep it on for too long. the light will warm up the water. not ideal for a goldfish.

I wouldn't put a goldfish into cold water. Try running some tap water at a luke warm temperature and keep the bowl somewhere in your house where the room temperature stays fairly constant (ie, not by a window that gets full sun, but not in the garage in winter time).

A lot of ladies at my office have beta fish they keep in little fish bowls on their desks at work, and they do just fine.

It depends on the type of goldfish.

Common feeder goldfish can tolerate temps lower than 55 degrees (F)

Fancies however will not/cannot tolerate temps. lower than 55 degrees (F).

But if your house has a heater (meaning you live in a cold climate), you should be fine.

I have my goldfish sitting next to a window that is often open and he is quite happily swimming around. He has been in this spot for about 6 months.

I am not sure about regular goldfish?

BUT! I know the Fancies (I have Orandas) need a bit of heater- I keep mine on 71/72
I have had one of them for 7 years.

If you have the gold fish in a good spot, the fish should be fine. :) Good luck.
