HELL NO! You won't get anything extra for doing extra. Retail su*ks! Low wage, few hours, little to no appreciation. If anyone says any different, they're full of sh*t!

I work at a decently paying job and a low paying job. I'm an accountant by day, and I work graveyards at a hotel on the weekends. I graduated from college two years ago. I am using the extra money to pay off my student loans really quickly. So... I have to agree with you. I do the work I'm supposed to at this hotel, but I don't go above and beyond. I'm friendly, but in my down time I do nothing to benefit the hotel- I simply surf the web and do only as much as I am asked to do. I think it's simply because you're right, it IS low pay. Heart's not in it.

There is a fine line between being the responsible hard-worker that can do things the right way and being walked on and taken for granted. Surely it makes you look good to management and may even encourage other workers to work as hard as you, but if you don't have limits or don't voice your opinion, you may be looked at as the one who'll do anything that somebody else doesn't wanna do. .......Bottom line: Speak up about how you do not appreciate having to pick up the slack of the slack-ers, but still reuctantly do it. Make sure management knows how you feel. You may also find it helpful to give a heads up to the person NOT doing their job....say it in a way that won't make you look like an ***....."Hey, did you know that ___ is supposed to be done every night? Yeah, I was here forever last night doing____........" or whatever.

My best piece of advice for you.... get an education and get away from retail. I worked in retail for 7 years while putting myself through high school and college. I am in my senior year of college and decided to quit working until I graduate. I now realize how much retail sucks! Some people enjoy it, but that's usually only the managers. Unless you want to be a retail manager, try to get out of there as quickly as you can!

Retail is little more than slave labor, and since the only perk is a discount, I can't understand why anyone would work someplace where they're not supporting their habit for something - like video games, or clothing, or booze.
Do just enough to get paid and not get fired. Exert yourself just enough for them to leave you alone, 'but not so much that you become the 'yes-man' or a mule for everyone else; and don't be afraid to say "no" to people. Like the Talking Heads lyric, "Try being a little bit more selfish. It might do you some good."

I've always been that person; going the extra mile and cleaning up after others. In a retail setting or even most offices you just end up being the one they expect to do it. It's sad but true. It's like they just come to accept there will be others that don't do their job and it's OK because someone else will clean up after them. It has always backfired for me eventually. Work ethics have gone into the toilet.

If you keep it up maybe someone will notice and promote you, but generally the upward mobility doesn't go very far in retail. You could also ask for a raise if the manager really likes you and you feel like you could get it.

It can pay to do extra, but remember, if you start off doing more, it will pay off in the long run (if you want to make retail a career) but you will most definatly be the go-to person for anything that goes wrong and you will end up picking up other people's slack. In my opinon, it's good to do that little extra, but speak up because people should do their own jobs.

Probably not...people aren't judged on merit unfortunately...they're judged on how well they can please the boss or by scholastic achievement on the application of a job...from there in it would how well you please the boss....days of being awarded on merit are over...captains of industry are dead...the business world is a corporate sham...where very little integrity and zero opportunity exists. As negative as that may seem that is the unadulterated truth as it were. I've been working at a job for two years now and I haven't gotten a raise or promotion and I don't expect to receive any. I've seen people come in after me and excel to management in a short period of time by applying the above outlined demographic. There's no room for hard workers at the top...and it's a damn shame.

do what will keep you from negative notice. In other words, if your manager is seeming to expect it, just do it. You probably won't get anything for your trouble, but someone might notice and think better of you for it.
Also, she was probably mad at the other workers, and the situation, more than she was mad at your question.
