Who researches and/or writes these reports? How can a country afford to go to war if it can't afford to feed its own people?

America may be the land of the free but first and foremost its the land of the almighty !!!?dollar the pursuit of wealth is the driving force in America and the fact that people go hungry in a wealthy society seems to be of little or no concern to most Americans least of all its President who is prepared to spend billions on a war that he cant win and who i believe recently made a cut to the benefits that the Vietnamese war veterans are receiving, perhaps those soldiers fighting now in a lost cause should take note.

This is a tough issue. Well one thing is for sure, we couldn't exactly "afford" to go to war, that's part of the reason we're in the mess we're in. The fact that it's the land of the free doesn't have anything to do with people going hungry. They are free to eat if they want, but if would rather starve...it's a free country after all. Also since it's a free country, the government can't force its citizens to help those who are hungry. The government is also not forced to help people in need, but they should.

I understand that it's sometimes very hard to stand on your own two feet, but the vast majority of this country has figured it out, and for those who can't, maybe we should help them out, but encourage them to get a job and not rely on the government to feed them.

You want to be careful of those kinds of studies. There was another prominent one not too long ago about hunger in America. Only when picked apart, it defined going hungry and having missed 1 meal in the last YEAR because you couldn't afford it.

That same study also said that like 19% of poor children were going to bed hungry, when again, that was at least once in a year's time. When you dug into the study, it was some very small number, less than 1% at any one time going hungry.

I'd really want to how they define hunger before making too much of this study.

It did NOT say they went hungry, it said that they had to go to charity outfits for food...they WERE fed, they just couldn't buy it themselves. When I was a student I had to do the same.

And New York has some of the highest prices in the nation, all the working poor had to do was move to anywhere and they would be able to afford food.

They are homeless people. There are a lot of junkies and insane people walking around NY.
There is also a lot of charity in NYC anyay, if they want it, but it can also be very dangerous competing with criminal and mentally unstable types hanging around the shelters and soup kitchens.
-- also I want to add that there are many immigrants in NY/NJ who find they can't make it there (I wonder if they would make it anywhere).. and the huge number of immigrants drive the quality of life down for the working class, putting the strain of overpopulation and fighting for decent waged work on everyone....thus having to get handouts of food from time to time when times are tough, and it doesn't surprise me they are getting tougher...

Do you know how much it costs to live in the north east in America? Holy crap, I'm surprised ANYONE is making it up there. I know, I come from the NY area, I am so glad I am out of that hellhole.

I supposedly make a "living wage" here in the South, but if we made the same wage in my home town, we and our two children would no doubt starve many a night.

Forget about how much our government charges us in our taxes to go to war,
You should see all the million dollar elite in NYC stepping over the homeless people.
--I heard they cleaned it up since then,
I'm only wondering where they put all those pissy smelling crazies....Hmmm...dare I ask?

The Government should help all the less advantaged people in this country more.that's what a good portion of tax dollars should be used for.The Greenville South Carolina country government tore down my home. condemned it while I was in Florida.I was working on a hole in my roof.I was in the hospital after getting hit by a van. they said they wrote me a letter but I didn't get it. to come to court.lost everything I owned.Government should be for the people. not against us.I am now disabled. probubly will never have another home. Its all very sad. what this country has become. The people dont care.I am the guy that painted your address number on your curb in the up state of S.C. over 90.000 of them.an articule in the paper said that because the responce time of EMS is so quick now its saveing over a 100 lifes a years in Greenvile county. I sure liked reading that articule.

Yep, we are even free to go hungry. What a wonderful country when nobody is standing around forcing one to eat.
You do not actually believe that we ( the USA ) can not feed our own people.

Should be careful what you believe, a lot of people here live on handouts- so I guess we can afford to feed them. Also you don't exactly see many skinny poor people in this country- we actually have the opposite problem since inexpensive food tends to be pretty fattening.

Just think of all the people that would go hungry if there was no defense industry that paid their monthly wages. And it wouldn 't just be in New York.
