I personally like using them in other countries and the US Mint is coming out with a series with pictures of past presidents.

Why have dollar coins not taken off in the US?

Dollar coins has nothing to do with backing up a currency, it has to do with government economics. If it only costs the government 25 cents to make a paper dollar that only lasts a couple of years at best, or 50 cents to make a coin that can be used for decades and can't be recreated cheaply by a counterfeiters, it only makes sense for them to want to use the coin.

Who would want to use dollar coins when the bills are well-established in this country. Other countries use dollar coins as a way of backing up their paper money. Americans typically have confidence in their economy, so the dollar bill is widely accepted. The reverse can be said for the coin. Since it's new, people will be less likely to trust it, and confidence in it falls. If no one uses it, it loses its value.

Besides, the coin is heavier than the bill.

The main reason is that a dollar bill is lighter and less likely to get lost that a dollar coin, so why use the heavier, easier to lose version of the same thing. The only practical use I've seen for a dollar coin is to dispense change in a machine and to use on the bus.

I like coins. They are a little heavier, but you know you got something with a coin. Paper is OK too,but for higher denominations. Still, I'd like to have $5, $10, and $25 coins.

yeah, i saw those new dollar coins. i think they don't work because they are too bulky and if you have the choice of a lightweight, sleek paper bill, or a bunch of heavy metal coins the bills are just easier. besides, how can you tip strippers with a dollar coin?

Of course you could still use it... but it's not convinent like it doesnt work in vending machines... but you could use it at supermarkets and Walmart. I like to keep my 1 dollar coins though... they're limited time only, espacially the silver ones with eagles on them.

I live in Canada so we have the Looney, does the name kind of tell you how we feel. We also have the Tooney, for 2 bucks. We were all upset about it at first but like anything over time you get used to it. Now the Looney Tooney is our normal.

Coins are an annoyance, they weight down your pocket and clink around when you walk. When I go to the UK it always annoys me that I wind up having to stuff my pockets with 1-pound coins. I'd be happy to go all-electronic.

I hate coins too heavy, wear out the pockets, and I would probably use them alot for quarters. plus drug dealers HATE taking coins if they have to run from the cops it slows them down lol just kidding
